The prehistoric finds of Rivoli Veronese

The area south of the urban area of Rivoli is characterised by the rocky spur of the Rocca, overlooking the Chiusa dell’Adige, the site of important finds from a prehistoric settlement from the Neolithic age; the remains of a medieval castle from the 11th century are also visible. Some of the finds are on display at the National Archaeological Museum in Verona and at the Pigorini Museum in Rome.

Napoleonic Museum in Rivoli Veronese

Rivoli was the scene of battle in January 1797 when Napoleon’s troops, engaged in the Italian campaign, faced the Austrian army under the orders of General Alvinczy. To commemorate the glorious victory, one of the most important streets in Paris was named ‘Rue de Rivoli’. In 1806, an imposing monument was erected on the battlefield, consisting of a column reaching 20 metres in height. This monument was pulled down by the Austrians in 1814, after the fall of Napoleon: the imposing base and some remains remain to this day.
At the Town Hall, you can visit the Massena Room, which houses a section of the Napoleonic Museum, Galanti Collection.

The fort on the top of Monte Castello

Built between 1850 and 1851 on the heights of Monte Castello, to the north-east of Rivoli, the Fort was intended to protect the roads from Affi to Rivoli and the Adige River, crossing its fire with the forts of Ceraino and Monte. Named Wohlgemuth in honour of the Austrian general who distinguished himself in the campaign of 1848, the main body of the Fort consists of a double cylindrical casemate stacked one on top of the other. Passed to the Italians in 1866 with the annexation of Veneto, the Fort was modified by reversing the firing of the batteries and adding a lower battery and barracks. A powder magazine was also built to the south of Rivoli.
The compounds are currently owned by the municipality and used for cultural and conference purposes.
Fort Rivoli can be visited at weekends.
