Lazise Castle

A medieval castle in Lazise

The first records of Lazise date back to the period between 888 and 961 when the town was a “free village”, i.e. a town not subject to any feudal lord. Between 1375 and 1381, Cansignorio della Scala strengthened the walls surrounding the town, which were interspersed with some twenty towers and protected by three gates. He also built the Scaliger castle, which belonged to the complex of defensive works in the territory of Verona.

That period was followed by four centuries of Venetian rule, during which Lazise became the most important town on the Veronese side of the lake and the castle was used as the residence of the magistrates of the Venetian Republic. During the Habsburg occupation, the fortress was sold to a private owner for a ludicrous sum and became a convenient source of stones for those who wanted to build a house. In the second half of the 19th century, the castle was bought by Count Giovanni Battista Buri, who restored it and surrounded it with a beautiful park, combining the charm of nature with a love for the Middle Ages.
