Franciscan cloister
A historical and artistic jewel
The cloister, attached to the Sanctuary, was part of a Franciscan monastic complex and is one of the few examples of monastic architecture still existing in the Verona area. For reasons unknown, it was ignored by local art historiography, it is a surprising historical and artistic jewel.
The forty-five lunettes in the portico in correspondence with the arches are covered with frescoes and tell about “the life and miracles of St Francis”. The frescoes were painted by Bernardino Muttoni the Elder and his son.
