Fort Wohlgemuth

The fort on the top of Monte Castello

Built between 1850 and 1851 on the heights of Monte Castello, to the north-east of Rivoli, the Fort was intended to protect the roads from Affi to Rivoli and the Adige River, crossing its fire with the forts of Ceraino and Monte. Named Wohlgemuth in honour of the Austrian general who distinguished himself in the campaign of 1848, the main body of the Fort consists of a double cylindrical casemate stacked one on top of the other. Passed to the Italians in 1866 with the annexation of Veneto, the Fort was modified by reversing the firing of the batteries and adding a lower battery and barracks. A powder magazine was also built to the south of Rivoli. The compounds are currently owned by the municipality and used for cultural and conference purposes. Fort Rivoli can be visited at weekends.
