Sommacampagna
Sommacampagna, between history, art and nature
Sommacampagna lies southeast of Lake Garda on the morainic hills. This small municipality of old origins played a leading role in the history of the Italian Risorgimento. The oldest settlement was located where we can still find the parish church of Sant’Andrea, a real jewel of Romanesque style. From 1300, the life of the community of Sommacampagna moves to the current historical centre where today you can find no less than nine Venetian villas. There is also the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Monte that stands on the crest of the morainic ridge, a church of old origins, known for having hosted Saint Francis. The saint of Assisi is depicted in a cycle of frescoes that can be admired on the perimeter walls of the church. It’s a Luogo del Cuore of the National Trust for Italy, which has been awarded the top regional and provincial ranking. Countryside, estates, villas and churches bear names well known around the town of Custoza, famous for the Risorgimento battles of 1848 and 1866, which claimed the lives of thousands of soldiers. Here you can visit the Ossuary of Custoza, a symbolic monument of the battles for Italian independence, where the remains of Piemontese, Italian and Austro-Hungarian fallen soldiers are kept.
