A small village considered one of the most beautiful in Italy

Borghetto sul Mincio is considered one of the most beautiful villages in Italy.
This small village, born in symbiosis with the river Mincio, owes its charm to the harmonious relationship that history and nature have preserved over the centuries, and today it represents an urban “unicum” of great charm.

The oldest part of the town still maintains the appearance of a ‘medieval village’, underlined by the presence of the bell tower, the watermill wheels and the fortresses of the Visconti Bridge, the extraordinary fortified dam built at the behest of Gian Galeazzo Visconti, Duke of Milan in 1393. Along the banks of the river Mincio, which flows through the centre of the village, you can spend pleasant days immersed in the peace and quiet of its little streets. Would you like a proof? Visit the small Church of St. Mark the Evangelist (18th century), built on the remains of an earlier Romanesque parish church from the 11th century, and admire the mysterious statue of St. John of Nepomuk, who protects those who fall into the waters of the river from drowning.

It is possible to cross the Tibetan bridge 15 people at a time, while those arriving by bike can cross the bridge carrying their bikes.

An amazing 360-degree panorama of the lake

Reaching the top of Monte Baldo in twenty minutes with the Malcesine cable car is an experience that cannot be missed. Considered to be one of the most spectacular in the world, this installation has a system of fully rotating cabins in the second section, introduced during renovation in 2002.

The starting station is in Malcesine, at an altitude of 99 metres, the intermediate station is in San Michele at 580 metres and the finishing point is in Tratto Spino on Monte Baldo, at 1780 metres. In the second section of the cable car, the cabins rotate 360 degrees, offering a view of the blue lake, the Scaligero Castle in Malcesine and the flora of Mount Baldo. If the sky is completely clear, it is possible to see the Brenta Dolomites, the Apennines and the Venice Lagoon. Reaching the top, you can try one of many trails, fly with a paraglider with a qualified instructor, or go downhill on a mountain bike and experience the thrill of a cross countryride.

The port in Lazise from the time of Venetian domination

The picturesque Porto Vecchio of Lazise, located at the foot of Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, is an essential tour stop.
Some documents confirm that this port already existed in the 10th century, but it only acquired its central role during the Venetian domination. During this period, in fact, it not only housed the fishermen’s boats but also served as a port of call for goods passing between Venice, Trentino and Lombardy.

At the ends of Porto Vecchio, which was initially smaller than it is today, there were two towers with an entrance to a small harbour near the larger tower. This was the starting point of the city walls that were connected with the rest of the medieval fortifications.
For those who arrive in Lazise by boat, there is a possibility to moor it temporarily and then take part in numerous excursions or use the Lake Garda ferries.

A lakeside in a historical little Venice

The Marconi Lakeside promenade is a point of interest not to be missed during a stay in Lazise. This picturesque promenade connects with the municipalities of Cisano, Bardolino and Garda in the north and in the south, with the beaches first and then with Peschiera del Garda.
To reach the lakefront, you can pass through one of the three old gates, Porta San Zeno, Porta Cansignorio and Porta del Lion.

The lakeside promenade has paving that recalls the waves, as the water once poured over the current promenade, reaching as far as the arcades of the restaurants. This is why Lazise was called a little Venice, built entirely on the water, where the streets were passable only by boat. These streets were also designed with a defence system consisting of palisades that prevented enemies from entering the town. Near the New Port, there is a bronze statue representing the Little Mermaid of the lake, a figure of a female leaping out of the water onto a rock who is looking at her reflection in the lake giving off an illusion of brightness.

At the beginning of the Marconi lakefront, there is a marble epigraph reminding us that Lazise is the oldest municipality in Italy. In fact, on 7 May 983, Emperor Otto II granted the inhabitants of Lazise the privilege to fortify the village with turreted walls and to enjoy extensive administrative autonomy, particularly in trade and fishing.

The valley of medieval mills

Val dei Molini, one of the most evocative and interesting natural oases in the entire moraine area of Benaco, runs along the course of the Tesina stream.
The valley, whose name carries the memory of many mills that have stood here since medieval times, is ideal for a nice family walk.

It is a protected area because of some rare animal and plant species living here in their preserved natural habitat. It also offers interesting evidence of the effects of the Quaternary glaciations.
