The symbol of Castelnuovo del Garda

The emblem of the town of Castelnuovo del Garda, which dominates the town, is the old castle, built in 1387 by Gian Galeazzo Visconti, lord of Milan, following the defeat suffered by the Della Scala family, lords of Verona. It was the main tower of the castle and was at the centre of a double circle of walls, as documented in the Carta dell’Almagià, depicting the Verona territory in 1400. The Visconti complex was erected on a pre-existing fortress, probably dating back to the 12th century. The belfry is a superelevation from the late 1700s and early 1800s and houses one of the most complete bell concerts in the Veronese style (fourteen bells).

The thousand-year-old fair, originated on Colle San Lorenzo an high ground in Cavalcaselle, where since the year one thousand it was a place of rest and refreshment for the many shepherds who passed through during their seasonal movement from Mount Baldo to the valley. There they would camp while waiting to ferry their herds of cattle across the Mincio River and return home. Around the hearth, shepherds set up small camps while women used to prepare a hot meal such as broth, risotto or tripe. On transit days the crowd of shepherds on the hill also drew many street vendors and tradition has it that this is how the fair began.

The Ancient Cavalcaselle Fair even though began as a shepherds’ fair-market, during the1800s established itself as a gathering occasion on San Lorenzo Hill. A union of agricultural tradition and folklore shared by the entire community making it different from others and very much felt by the inhabitants of the surrounding area.

The event takes place during 4 days where bivouacs and covers very similar to the historical ones are created by the various associations, in which typical local products can be tasted.

It’s June 24, 1866: a handful of men, barricaded in a building, surrounded by the enemy, with no way out, rationing ammunition and taking advantage of what little they had managed to hold off from the ever advancing multitude. Now alone (the rest of the Allies were falling back in the distance), with ammunition running out and the opponents setting fire to the house to flush them out, the officers decide to surrender to save the lives of the few remaining. Only one thing is missing: the Regimental Flag, which could not be delivered into the hands of the enemy.

It is decided to tear the flag to pieces, each of the men will guard a part of it, the staff and arrow are hidden in the chimney and then the declaration of surrender. The enemy seeing them in small numbers leaving the settlement grants the honour of arms and even compliments the bravery of the few. When the war was over, the flag was reassembled and in a solemn ceremony, it was handed back to its Regiment in St. Mark’s Square in Venice. This is the story of Oliosi’s Tricolour, the flag of the 44th Infantry of the Forli Brigade.

The Grape Festival is an event for wine lovers (and not only)! In fact, in addition to food and wine stands where you can taste wine and food related to tradition, there is also a theme park to entertain the little ones.

In August don’t take any other appointments!
