The 17th-century Venetian villa of Palazzo Carlotti
The work “Il Compianto sul Cristo morto”, after eight years of restoration, has returned to Caprino, its town of origin, inaugurated with an official ceremony at the town hall of Palazzo Carlotti. Attributed to the Master of St. Anastasia, the sculptural group consists of the life-size Christ laid in the shroud. In this representation, the dead body of Jesus is central, whose face becomes the narration of suffering, the anguish and the human tragedy of death itself. At the head, he is supported by Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus, who have the lower parts of their limbs and forearms removed. Finally, among the figures of Jesus’ mourners, there are the sculptures of John, his favourite apostle, his mother and two pious women who, according to the Gospel of John, can be identified as Mary of Cleophas and Mary Magdalene.
